CHOOSE TO WAIT COURSE
WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM THIS COURSE
Youth Groups & Leaders/Teachers/Engaged Couples/Newly Weds/
Married Couples/Parents/Sunday School Teachers
__ The global AIDS pandemic
is perhaps the most dire and complicated tragedy in human history, and
its ramifications will affect our world in ways that we cannot imagine.
There is no human wisdom or power that can stop it in time to prevent
the loss and suffering of many millions of people. We need the hand of
our merciful God to act on our behalf, and we trust that He will through
the prayers of His people. You can join with us in our prayer ministry and pray for the specific needs of Christ’s Hope.
Choose to Wait The emphasis of this program is on sexual purity that comes from abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage. It is an outstanding AIDS prevention tool and gives youth, a strong moral foundation on which to base their choices.
Foundational truths of scripture from Genesis chapter 1-3 regarding gender, love and marriage and sex are clearly taught. This provides a positive view of the equal value that both male and female have as human beings and provides skills to maintain a lifestyle of sexual fidelity in all relationships.
It is our aim to teach children and youth the following:
The ultimate goal of Choose to Wait is to see redeemed people in good marriages, with happy families involved in successful work in an AIDS free world.
Introduction The emphasis of the programme is on abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage. It is an outstanding AIDS prevention tool and gives youth a strong moral foundation on which to base their choices.
It teaches a positive view of the equal value that both male and female have as human beings and provides skills to maintain a lifestyle of sexual fidelity in all relationships.
There are 4 ways in which “Choose to Wait” (CtW) is presented:
- By drama and/or music teams which are approved and officially accredited by Christ’s Hope International. They present the CtW
message briefly and powerfully in assemblies, during break times and in a classroom setting.
- By CtW teachers who have been trained and officially accredited by Christ’s Hope International. They work through the full CtW
programme with learners using the CtW book.
- In school and community based CtW children’s and youth clubs where youth are encouraged to be part of the new AIDS free
generation through teaching, positive peer pressure and provision of a safe and good environment for social activities.
- In church youth groups or small discipleship groups.
- At week-long youth conferences where the entire Foundation’s Course is presented.
Basis for “Choose to Wait” programme The messages which are instilled in children about what sexuality is and the place that sexual intimacy has in their lives are either false or only half true and result in damage and harm. Often the messages are mixed and conflicting, resulting in confusion about sex and sexuality.
Children receive messages through the prevailing culture:
¯ # Family models – what they see and hear at home.
¯ # The media – what they see and hear in magazines, on TV and radio
¯ # Peer pressure – what they see and hear among their friends and neighbours
¯ # Traditions – things that are done without question because they have always been done that way.
¯ # The church – what is taught and/or practiced within their religion.
¯ # Educational institutions – what they see and hear from teachers at school etc
¯ # Strong beliefs – what they believe is true about what they see and hear.
These messages can be summed up as follows:
1. Sex is for physical release and pleasure. It is a physical need that must be met.
2. Sex is important for love and relationships between consenting adults.
3. Sex is for power (magical, financial, emotional, potency) and prowess.
4. Sex is for recreation
5. Sex is a taboo subject
When they believe and live according to this, the consequences are
- Unwanted children (we often emphasize the bad consequences for the pregnant girl by saying “unwanted pregnancy”.
However, we
need to see that often the negative consequences are more far reaching for the unwanted child)
- Disease and death.
- Depression, broken relationships, hurting and confused adults and children.
- Broken families.
- Women and girls treated as important only for their role and function and not as human beings of great value.
Our message, based on Genesis 1, 2 and 3 in the Maker’s Manual, counters the prevailing lies. God’s intentions for sex, love and marriage are for life and good. God created us male and female in his image. He made our sexuality and he made it good.
1. Sex is a desire, not a need. A desire can and must be controlled.
2. Sex is not for love and relationships but for marriage. Marriage is for love.
3. Sex is not for power – it is for mutual giving and receiving.
4. Sex is not for recreation but for procreation. When we devalue sex, we devalue human life
* Our goals are to:
1. Instruct, teach, role and instil views, attitudes and beliefs about sexuality that are based on foundational truths of the creative
order
in Genesis 1-3.
2. Develop, through the above foundations, the character traits of respect and self-control that are needed to keep sexuality in the
right
place.
3. Explain fully what God says about sexuality, sex, gender, love and marriage.
4. Build very strong motivations in youth to remain sexually pure.
5. Provide the skills and build defenses needed to remain pure and stand against false, negative moral messages about sexuality.
6. Teach them skills to prepare now to get and give blessing through their sexuality resulting in good marriages and happy families.
Summary
It is our aim to teach children and youth the following
1. You are worth waiting for. You have value because you are made in the image of God. Male and female are made in his image
therefore they have equal value regardless of their different role and function.
2. Sex is worth waiting for. Sex has value because it procreates the image of God.
3. Sex is for marriage and marriage is for love. We do not merely say “wait for marriage” but teach about Biblical marriage so that
we will
see good marriages and happy families.
